Year 1 and 2
Tip of the Week
06-11-15
Teaching your child about
sequences can be built into everyday activities at home. Use words such as
first, next, then, last to help them learn about sequencing. E.g First you eat
your dinner. Then you have a bath. Last I read you a bedtime story. E.g
First you do your homework. Then you can watch the
t.v.
05-10-15
Your child may make a mistake with their word
endings e.g. “I catched the bus yesterday.” – don’t correct them but say it
back to them with the right word. “Oh, you caught the bus yesterday.”
28-09-15
If your child stammers, focus on what they are
saying and NOT how they are saying it. Your child will then know you are
interested in what they are saying and that’s the most important thing.
You will be given specific advice by your child’s Speech & Language
Therapist about other strategies.
21-09-15
When you child says the wrong sound, don’t ask
them to say it the right way as they won’t be able to do this. Instead, say the
word with the correct sound e.g. “look mummy a tar” – you would say “Yes, look it's a car, it's a car.” As children get
older, they need to hear the sound said correctly.
